To bring the awareness and find ways to strengthen the bonds between the generations of the immigrant families who don’t share a common language. If possible, try to explore possible ways to do so without the hassle of learning the language.

rationale

Growing up in a household which each generation speaks different languages from each other because of the family emigrating history. I’m always intrigued how the native language and community language affect the immigrants family and their self identity. Once the family settled in a new country, the native language eventually fading within the family down the line. How long does it take? And what’s the best ways to make sure the native language sustains within the family despite it’s different from the community language? Or is there way to close the gaps between generations despite the language barrier? Would like to look into more, bring awareness and encourage them to reconnect the gap.

the problems

America is a country founded by immigrants and many of the cities are multicultural. One of the dilemmas within the immigrant families is preserving the native language and at the same time adapting the new language. Base on the research, the native language usually sustains within the families for 2 or 3 generations at most. Sometimes it causes a disconnection and frustration within the family as the younger generation cannot speak the native language while the older generation are not able to speak the new one. Would like to explore if there’s a way to create a stronger bonds despite the language barrier.

the goal

  • investigates the issue and shows the users they are not alone
  • suggests other ways to help to communicate or create the bond with the family older members
  • encourages them to take action to reconnect the loved one whom they had a hard time to do so due to the language barrier

Story

Jacob is the first generation immigrant that was born and raised in the States. His parents moved to the states in their 20s. Jacob was babysat by his grandparents when he was little for few years, during that time, he was able to speak some cantonese to communicate with his grandparents. but lost the ability after stop speaking it when the grandparents moved back to Hong Kong for a few years and then moved back to the States. Since then, Jacob has been busy with his life and picking up a second language is not his piroriy. His communication with his grandparents becomes really minimals and his parents serve as the translator between them when it's needed.

He’s hoping to be able to reconnect and communicate with his grandparents and learn more about their stories. However, he isn’t really interested in learning the language since he doesn’t really need to use it in daily life and has a busy schedule. So some program or device that allow him to communicate and get to know his grandparents’ stories in a deeper level and vice versa will be helpful.
